US Forces in Germany. Private vehicle series 2000-07. Normal series German plates optional since 2005 and mandatory since 2007.
First two letters were chosen among combinations not used in the German system. Long plates used AD.

The shield used was similar to the German state seals. The text
means Armed Forces of the United States of America in Germany.

American size plates used AF from July until September 2000, but that series was discontinued (replaced by HK) because it was interpreted as American (or Allied) Forces. This was not intended as the purpose of the new plates was to make them look almost like normal German.
